Deciding to adopt a rescue dog is one of the most rewarding choices a family can make.
But the adoption fee is only the start.
Food, vet visits and flea treatment all add up.
And for first-time owners, those ongoing costs can come as a surprise.
Here’s what it really costs: adoption fees at most South African SPCAs and animal welfare organisations range from about R900 to R1,400, and usually include sterilisation, a first vaccination and a microchip.
After that, you’ll need to budget for food, regular vaccinations, parasite control and vet visits.
HOW MUCH ARE ADOPTION FEES?
Fees vary between organisations and regions. Here are some examples of published adoption fees for dogs:
WHAT DOES THE ADOPTION FEE INCLUDE?
You’re not paying for the animal itself.
According to the Vereeniging SPCA, the fee covers the expenses the SPCA has already paid, such as sterilisation, the first vaccination, deworming, an ID disc and a microchip.
Some organisations also include flea treatment or a collar.
The Durban and Coast SPCA says the adoption fee is heavily subsidised, and that the cost of vaccinations alone at a private vet is more than its fee.
WHY ADOPTING IS GOOD VALUE
Sterilisation is one of the biggest savings.
At a private vet, sterilisation can cost between R2,500 and R3,500 for a female dog, and between R1,800 and R2,500 for a male dog, according to industry estimates.
Since most adoption fees include sterilisation, adopting can save you more than the fee itself.

You’ll also need to buy basics, such as a bed, bowls, a lead and toys.
