South Africa’s long-running adult lifestyle exhibition, Sexpo, is getting a new name – and a new attitude.
From this year, the popular event will be known as the Love Expo, a rebrand that organisers say marks a bold new era of inclusivity, freedom, and connection.
The decision, organisers explained, comes after years of battling censorship, from banned advertisements to social media restrictions, due to the event’s provocative name.
“After years of being called The Sex Expo and constantly fighting censorship from banned adverts to social media shutdowns, it became clear that the name itself was limiting how people saw us,” said spokesperson Sarah Dean.
“We weren’t being silenced because of what we did, but because of what people thought we did.”
Love Over Labels
According to Citizen, Dean said the name change represents more than just a new brand – it’s a shift in attitude.
“Love is bigger and more inclusive than sex alone. It connects every one of us,” she explained.
“The new identity represents vibrant energy, cheeky fun, and unforgettable entertainment.”
While the rebrand promises a softer and more inclusive image, Dean assured longtime fans that the “naughty” side that made Sexpo famous isn’t going anywhere.
“The Love Expo still celebrates the same sense of openness and curiosity that made Sexpo iconic. It’s just now framed through a lens that everyone can relate to.”
Reflecting a Changing Audience
Since its debut in 2007, the expo has attracted more than half a million visitors.
Despite the new name, Dean said the purpose remains unchanged.
“It’s always been about authenticity and freedom. Love Expo gives adults a space to celebrate love in all its forms without fear or judgment,” she said.
“It’s not about pushing boundaries – it’s about removing unnecessary ones.”
Expanding the Conversation
This year’s event will expand its offerings to include body positivity, LGBTQ+ pride, and discussions on communication, confidence, and consent.
“Visitors can expect spaces that celebrate every kind of love and identity,” Dean said.
“We’ve carefully chosen our exhibitors and experiences to make people feel safe, inspired, and empowered.”
A Celebration of Love – and Change
Dean acknowledged that while public attitudes have become more accepting, some resistance remains.
“We’ve seen vandalised billboards, digital blackouts, and pushback from traditional media, which shows there’s still a conservative streak out there,” she said.
“But every year, thousands of people show up expressing who they are without apology. That tells a different story.”
