DIRCO pokes fun at Gareth Cliff’s tweet about G20 Summit

Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s Deputy Director General Clayson Monyela has poked fun at Gareth Cliff’s prediction about the G20 Summit.

This comes after 20 delegates from around the world, including one representing the AU and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, attended the two-day event in Johannesburg.

DIRCO DDG POKES FUN AT GARETH CLIFF’S TWEET

Over the past few days, Gareth Cliff was among several critics who predicted a disastrous G20 Summit in Johannesburg.

This came after US President Donald Trump announced the country’s boycott, refusing to send any delegates to South Africa, based on allegations that the latter is promoting the “racial discrimination” of white people.

Later, the heads of state from Mexico and Argentina revealed that they would also not be present, opting to send high-ranking representatives instead.

Gareth Cliff posted on X: “Dropping like flies.”

The outspoken podcaster – once a shock jock on 5FM – added in another post: “How’s that G16 looking, Cyril? Maybe it’ll be a nice round number by the time it kicks off”.

Despite the concerns, 19 representatives from around the world joined President Cyril Ramaphosa at Nasrec Centre in Sandton to discuss pressing international economic issues.

Over the weekend, DIRCO DDG Clayson Monyela responded to Gareth Cliff’s tweet with an image of all G20 representatives, minus the US.

“Sorry, I couldn’t resist”, he posted on X.

Gareth Cliff has yet to respond.

WHO ATTENDED THE G20?

According to Clayson Monyela, 19 representatives – bar the US – joined South Africa at the G20 Summit.
