Fadlu Davids reveals a stunning message from an Orlando Pirates official ahead of the historic CAF Confederation Cup final.
Simba SC head coach has opened up about a powerful message he received from an Orlando Pirates official after securing a spot in the final for the first time in the club’s history.
Davids led his Tanzanian giants past South African side Stellenbosch FC with a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory in the two-legged semi-final clash. After a tense 0-0 draw at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday, Simba advanced thanks to their crucial first-leg win last week in Zanzibar.
Now, Simba SC prepares to face two-time champions RS Berkane in what promises to be a thrilling final.
‘Remember it was Berkane that beat us’
Following the historic qualification, Davids shared the emotional and motivating words he received from a high-ranking figure at Orlando Pirates.
“I just had a message from one of the important officials at Orlando Pirates, and it says ‘remember it was Berkane that beat us on penalties,’” Davids revealed.
The haunting memory still lingers for Davids, who watched RS Berkane snatch the 2022 CAF Confederation Cup from Orlando Pirates’ grasp during his tenure as co-coach with Mandla Ncikazi.
“That match still haunts me. We beat Simba in the quarter-finals. We beat Al Ahli Tripoli, and we got Berkane, and we lost on penalties. So, Berkane is an improved side. We played against this coach [Mouin Chaâbani] last season [with Raja Casablanca],” he recalled.
Simba’s upcoming final not only represents a shot at redemption but also an opportunity to write a glorious new chapter in their CAF history.
Simba eyes double success with league title still in sight
While Simba SC basked in the glow of continental success, Davids quickly shifted focus to domestic matters. The club currently sits second in the Tanzanian Premier League, trailing fierce rivals Young Africans by 12 points. However, Simba holds a major advantage with four games in hand.
Davids remains determined to chase glory on both fronts
“But of course, we also have four important league matches now in the space of two weeks before we travel to Morocco. So we will celebrate, have two days off, and focus on collecting our points to catch up to the 12 points that we are behind [Young Africans],” he said.
With momentum on their side and a fierce desire to overturn past heartbreak, Simba SC looks poised to make 2025 a year to remember both domestically and across Africa.
