According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), meat inflation is only up 0.7%.
But with everything else rising in price, sometimes pensioners can’t justify buying meat.
Those who want to save money and enjoy their favourite cuts can shop these active specials at South Africa’s favourite supermarkets.
Shops Offering the Best Butchery Deals
This is where pensioners will find the most affordable butchery options at supermarkets.
Pensioners can also use these specials to compare prices at their local butchery.
All these deals are active until 1 November 2026.
Chicken
On average, this October, you can buy a fresh pack of chicken for R59.99 per kilogram at shops like Pick ‘n Pay and Food Lover’s Market.
The cheapest chicken on the market is whole chicken or chicken legs from Shoprite. The retailer is selling these for R54.99 per kg at inland shops.
Lamb
If you’re preparing for the festive season, you can get a leg of lamb or shoulder roast from Food Lover’s Market for R189.99 per kg.
For a deboned leg of lamb, head to Pick ‘n Pay, where it’s R239.99 per kg.
As the weather warms up, different stewing products are also on promotion.
At Pick ‘n Pay, stewing lamb is on promotion for R169.99 per kg.
Beef
Ground beef at Food Lover’s Market is the most affordable beef product. However, ground beef is typically 75% beef, 5% soya, and the rest is spices and water.
So, while it may be cheap, pensioners aren’t getting much beef.
To get affordable beef, there’s stewing beef on promotion at Pick ‘n Pay for R94.99 per kg and bulk beef mince for R99.99 per kg.
Pork
Shoprite again comes in as the cheapest option.
But if you’re stocking up for the festive season, consider going to Makro.
At Makro, pensioners can save R30 on boneless smoked gammon that’s selling for R69.99 per kilogram.
Game / Venison
Not many supermarkets sell game.
But pensioners can get affordable ostrich mince or steak from Pick ‘n Pay and Checkers.
At Checkers, pensioners can buy 400 grams of ostrich steak for R59.99 and at Pick ‘n Pay 500 grams of mince for R66.99.
In Gauteng, pensioners can order online from Venisons Co.
