Updated Top 20 SA schools First XV rugby rankings

SA schools First XV action continued this past weekend in what was the penultimate round of action for many schools around the country.

Very few of the Top 20-ranked schools were in action, thus resulting in minor changes in the latest rankings.

Neither of the top two schools – Paarl Gimnasium and Stellenberg – kicked a ball in anger.

Bragging rights

Third-placed Paul Roos claimed bragging rights in one of South Africa’s biggest schoolboy rugby derbies after defeating Grey College 37-29 at the Markotter in Stellenbosch.

Around 16 000 spectators packed the venue for a heavyweight clash between two of the country’s leading rugby schools, with the match delivering plenty of drama.

Grey College led 14-13 at half-time, but Paul Roos produced a sensational ‘third quarter’ to take control of the contest.

The Maroon Machine scored three unanswered tries after the break, turning the match on its head and opening up a 32-17 advantage with 20 minutes remaining.

Grey refused to surrender and mounted a determined late comeback, but Paul Roos held firm to secure an impressive victory.

The hosts scored six tries to Grey’s four, completing a memorable performance against one of their biggest rivals.

Record win

Elsewhere in the Cape, SACS scored a record 55-22 win over Bishops at Bishops, while Rondebosch claimed a narrow 33-29 victory over Wynberg.

In other notable results, Grey High School beat Selborne College 61-47 in a high-scoring encounter, while HTS Drostdy upset Outeniqua 37-26.

Queen’s College claimed bragging right over Dale College 22-12.

As always, these rankings are subjective and should be viewed as an informed opinion rather than an exact science. They take into account factors such as the quality of opposition, consistency, recent form and head-to-head results.
