The TEN priciest staples South Africans buy every day

Some of the every-day items South Africans fill their trolleys with are among the most expensive things you can buy per kilogram/litre. Rand for rand, we’ve pulled together current 2026 retail pricing to see how many regular staples we take for granted that are actually costing you big time.

TEN PRICEY STAPLES SOUTH AFRICANS BUY DAILY

WHAT DIDN’T MAKE THE CUT

Any South Africans shopping daily perhaps won’t be surprised by the above. Of course, you can buy in bulk from a wholesale retailer and save a lot more. Milk sits around R20 per litre. And maize meal, South Africa’s true dietary staple, peaks at roughly R22 per kg. This places it far below everything on this list. Even the projected R3-per-litre increase (inland) only takes it to R30.10 per litre, which happens to be a new South African record. Even so, that’s more or less 100-times cheaper than coffee or butter. The only difference is you don’t use as much of it to get to and from work every day …
