WHY you weren’t paid: SASSA fourth payment date explained

The South African is inundated with messages regarding the SASSA fourth payment date. Every month, like clockwork, the same panic and anger spreads through beneficiaries. Grant day comes and goes, but the money isn’t there.

So, let’s get to the bottom of the question: Why hasn’t your SASSA grant been paid? And what can you do about it …

SASSA FOURTH PAYMENT DATE

As we all know, the South African Social Security Agency follows a fixed payment order each month. Older Persons Grants go out first. Disability & War Veterans follow a day later. Children’s Grants – including the Child Support Grant and Foster Child Grant – come after that. That’s the cycle most people know. Three days, three categories, done …

Then there’s day four. Next month it falls on Monday 7 September 2026. This date isn’t for everyone. It’s reserved for beneficiaries SASSA flagged for grant review or eLife Certification. If your name lands on this list, you will not get paid with everyone else in your category. You get paid on the fourth day instead, once all is rectified.

SAME PROBLEM EACH MONTH

However, SASSA National Spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi says the agency keeps running into the same problem each month. Beneficiaries under review don’t realise what the SASSA fourth payment date is for, or when it is. So, they see no payment on the normal date, assume the worst, and call or flood SASSA offices in-person in a panic. Moreover, they don’t realise these grant reviews aren’t random or malicious.

SASSA runs continuous checks on beneficiary eligibility, verifying income, life status and other qualifying details for everyone. eLife Certification is part of that, too, confirming a beneficiary is still alive and still meets the criteria for their grant. The agency leaned hard into the practice in 2025. More than 291 000 beneficiaries were identified for review and as many as 34 600 grants were summarily cancelled, according to figures from the Finance Minister’s 2026 Budget.

YOU’VE DONE NOTHING WRONG

Critically, none of that means a flagged beneficiary has done anything wrong (until proven otherwise). It means SASSA wants/needs updated documentation before the SASSA fourth payment dates rolls around. You must visit your nearest SASSA office during the month to complete the review. Skip this and SASSA can suspend your grant in the following payment cycle.

Leave it unresolved for any longer, and the grant can be cancelled outright. Beneficiaries who are bedridden or otherwise unable to get to an office in person can have alternative arrangements made with a doctor’s note and documents verified by a commissioner of oaths (SAPS police station).

HOW TO RECTIFY SASSA FOURTH PAYMENT DATE

So, if payment hasn’t landed for your SASSA grant date in September 2026, don’t panic on day one. Check whether you’ve been contacted about a review or eLife Certification first. Make sure your cellphone number on file with SASSA is current. The bulk SMS notifications that explain all of this are useless if they’re going to a number you haven’t used in years.

Get to your nearest office before month-end and complete the review. You will need to produce all the same documents – and copies – just like you did when you first applied to prove your identity, assets and means (if applicable). The alternative, ignoring it, means payment may not come at all next month.
